Northern California Native, Sarah Tancer moved to New York to study theatre at NYU where she received her B.F.A. An integral part of an actor’s training is learning to become aware of tensions that inhibit expression. Proper alignment and release of habitual holding patterns frees the body and allows the actor to be more responsive, truthful and energetic. Actor speak aside, Sarah was drawn to the methods by which these tensions could be dissolved. She was taught the Alexander Technique, a modality in which gentle touch and imagery communicate to the recipient to release postural blocks. Keenly interested in how the listening, movement and communication skills she utilized as an actor could be creatively infused into healing, she made the decision to attend the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy and become a New York State Licensed Massage Therapist.
Sarah’s primary aim as a therapist is to listen to the needs of the client and modify the treatment accordingly. Her massages creatively combine flow and stretching with specific muscle work. She can work very deeply or very lightly but always works from a perspective of trying to encourage the body to release into its most optimal state of balance and alignment. When the body is closer to its natural state of harmony, it has more energy - and even if you’re not an actor - more expression.
